When is the Best Time to Go to the Serengeti?

The best times to visit Serengeti National Park are between January and February or from June to October. However, the Serengeti's rich wildlife ensures an incredible safari experience regardless of when you go. Thanks to the park's expansive plains and temperate weather, the vegetation remains sufficiently sparse for wildlife viewing, and the area's brief rainy seasons in November to December and March to April are usually not too uncomfortable.

Month-by-Month Guide for Travelling to the Serengeti:

Visiting the Serengeti from January to March

January transforms the Serengeti’s rolling plains into a vibrant emerald landscape, with minimal dust and excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. During this time, the Ndutu Plains are especially sought after due to their lush greenery and the presence of resident animals like elephants, giraffes, and various antelope species throughout the year.

February brings the wildebeest calving season, making it an optimal time for a Serengeti safari to observe numerous herds welcoming new calves. Thousands of wildebeests, along with zebras and gazelles, migrate through the Serengeti National Park during this period.

As March arrives, it signifies the end of the green season and the onset of the 'long rains'. This leads to a low season in the Serengeti, with fewer safari visitors, as the migratory herds start to depart from the southern Ndutu region and migrate westward. The humidity increases in March, but it’s an ideal time to visit the Serengeti due to significantly reduced accommodation rates.

Travelling to the Serengeti from April to June

Visitor numbers in the Serengeti begin to decline around April, primarily due to increased humidity and rainy weather during this period. While this month is not typically regarded as the ideal time to visit the Serengeti, it can offer a chance to venture off the usual paths and discover the park's more remote areas.

May experiences very heavy rainfall, and the lodges and camps within the Serengeti tend to be quite empty. This period is not recommended for a safari unless you head to the central and western sections of the park to witness the Great Migration.

June marks the beginning of the sought-after dry season and represents an excellent opportunity to visit the Serengeti just before the height of the safari season. During this time, the Great Migration starts moving north, dry conditions take over the landscape, and there is only a small likelihood of occasional afternoon thunderstorms.

Visiting the Serengeti from July to September

A large number of tourists arrive in the Serengeti between July and September to experience the Great Migration. The river crossings provide a thrilling sight during this time, often leading to chaos within the herds as crocodiles lie in wait to ambush them while they cross. During these months, there are more safari vehicles in Serengeti National Park than at any other time of the year.

August represents the peak season and is widely regarded as the best time to observe the dramatic river crossings from northern Serengeti into Masai Mara. This period is ideal for numerous wildlife sightings as the herds are more visible, and many predators are present – it's common to see Africa's big cats on the hunt!

September continues to be quite busy for visitors in Serengeti National Park, particularly at the borders of Kenya and Tanzania, as the animal herds cross the Mara River in smaller groups. The southern areas of the park, however, tend to be less crowded in September.

Travelling to the Serengeti from October to December

By October, the Serengeti's plains are primarily dry, yet the dry season is nearing its conclusion. Even though the herds of the Wildebeest Migration have traveled into Kenya, observing wildlife in Serengeti National Park remains truly remarkable.

November marks the start of the ‘short rains’ in Serengeti National Park, bringing a quieter low season. These rains rejuvenate the southern regions with fresh grasslands, making it an ideal time to enjoy lower prices.

As the rainfall persists, the landscape transforms from arid dusty fields to lush grasslands.

The cycle of the Great Migration resumes in December as the herds migrate to the Ndutu region's southern plains in preparation for the breeding season. Temperatures and humidity begin to climb as the wet summer approaches. The festive time of year can get quite busy, so it's wise to secure your lodging ahead of time.
