Nyerere (Selous) National Park

Nyerere (Selous) National Park

Covering an area of 30,893 square kilometers, Nyerere National Park is the largest standalone national park in Africa and ranks among the largest in the world. Situated in southeastern Tanzania, it is approximately 230 kilometers by road from Dar es Salaam city to Mtemere Gate, and was established from the Selous Game Reserve, a vast wilderness and popular safari destination in Southern Tanzania.

Nyerere Park is home to the highest concentration of wildlife, offering a diverse and plentiful collection of animals. Since this park is relatively new and still less visited by tourists, the wildlife here is generally less accustomed to human presence. Notable populations of big cats, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs, can be found alongside large game species such as elephants, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, elands, zebras, wildebeests, and other fauna.

Following its establishment by the Tanzanian government and the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) in late 2019, there are plans for further development and more professional management of the park to enhance the tourism experience.
